Ustad Yaqub Hussain Khan Sahab

Born at Atrauli on 21st May 1936, Ustad Yaqub Hussain Khan is one of the senior-most Vocalists of the legendary Agra Gharana. The Agra Gharana of Hindustani (North Indian Classical) Music is more than 500 years old. Right from the days of Haji Sujaan khan, (Court Musician of Akbar, the Mughal Emperor) the founder of Agra Gharana, the music (Vocal) came from father to son till now, the very present day. He is the 14th direct descendent of the Agra Gharana.

He started learning vocal North Indian Classical from his father Gayan Acharya Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan ‘Pranpriya’ at the age of 14, when he also joined High School in 1950. He also learned music from his maternal Uncle Gayan Samrat Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan Dilrang (Khurja-Atrauli Gharana), Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan (his brother-in-law), his elder brother Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan, ‘Darpan’ and Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan.

An Arts graduate from AMU he represented Aligarh Muslim University twice in youth Festival at Talkatora Garden, as a Vocalist in 1958-59 and 1959-1960. He gave a memorable vocal performance before Mr. V.V.Giri, the Vice President of India then. He was also invited for vocal concert by Nawab of Rampur, in 1960-61. After listening to his superb voice and Sureela Gayaki, the Nawab became overwhelmed and awarded the young Yaqub Hussian with great honours and a cash award. In 1972 he performed at the court of Sananad Maharaj of Sanand near Ahmedabad. There he sang for more than six hours continuously, which is a remarkable achievement.

In Mumbai, he gave his first performance in the year 1964 at Haldankar’s Art Studio (the famous painter). Thereafter, he performed in many Mehfils and regaled audiences. He has also given performances at NCPA, Dilrang Music Festival, Sangeet Maha Bharti, Tejpal Hall, Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, Geeta Mandir hall, Bharti Vidhya Bhavan, Karnatak Sangh Hall, (Kala Bharti), Ustad Allahdiya Khan Sangeet Samaroh, Chembur and many other Music Circles.

The cities in India where he has given Vocal Concerts are Ahmedabad, Aligarh, Delhi, Patna, Agra Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Allahbad, Calcutta, Surat, Nasik, Deolali, Satara and many others.

Ustad Yaqub Hussain Khan is not only an excellent vocalist but also a gifted teacher. He has trained a number of disciples and his music has also been recorded.
